The Silent Film Piano Workshop is an intensive, one-day masterclass designed for pianists, composers, and film enthusiasts.
This condensed program guides participants through the art, history, and practical techniques of live piano accompaniment for silent cinema.
Attendees will learn how to sync music with visual narrative and transform silent images into living emotional experiences in real time.
Objectives
    • Understand the core historical styles of silent film music.
    • Learn practical keys for real-time improvisation and thematic creation.
    • Accompany a live short film scene by the end of the day.

Workshop Schedule (1-Day Intensive)
Morning Session: Foundation & Aesthetics
    • 09:30 – 11:00 | History & Style Analysis: Introduction to silent cinema genres (Comedy, Expressionism, Melodrama) and original period music collections.
    • 11:15 – 13:00 | The Improviser’s Toolkit: Building musical themes (leitmotifs) for comedy, suspense, and romance.
      Exercises on managing seamless emotional transitions.

Afternoon Session: Practice & Performance
    • 14:30 – 16:30 | Practical Cueing & Scoring: How to map a film scene, mark key action beats, and synchronize keyboard timing with the screen.
      Hands-on individual practice with short film clips.
    • 16:45 – 18:30 | Final Masterclass & Live Showcase: Participants perform their original live accompaniment for a selected short silent film (e.g., Charlie Chaplin or Georges Méliès) with real-time feedback.
